T.O.F.U. Magazine - Call For Submissions

Vegans of Tumblr! I could really use a signal boost on this, if possible. We’re trying to reach potential contributors from people outside of our normal pool. If we can get this spread far and wide, it would be phenomenal.

T.O.F.U. Magazine is currently seeking contributors for our upcoming issue! Set to be released in August, issue six needs content in a number of categories:

    STANDARD CONTENT

    • Activism (bringing veganism to the world)
    • Life (reviews of vegan-friendly industries and entertainment, personal interest stories)
    • DIY (veganizing everyday living)
    • Eat (nutritional information)
    • Recipes (self-explanatory)

    FOCUS FEATURES

Each issue of the new T.O.F.U. has at its centre a singular theme. In the past we’ve done vegan parenting and spring cleaning. This issue, we’re getting into some serious business: Issue 6 will focus on the intersections of veganism with forms of oppression, appropriation, commodification, and difference.  Examples include:

    • the erasure of vegans of colour from the movement
    • the infantilisation of vegans by mainstream society *
    • latent sexism and homophobia within the community
    • body policing
    • appropriation of terms like “ahimsa”
    • the ways in which the veganism as a culture can attempt to stifle divergent opinions from within

If you think you’d like to write a piece on one of these issues, or something in the same vein, drop us a line!

    FORMAT

Send us a pitch before you send us an article! Just a quick paragraph outlining what you’d like to cover, and how you’d like to do so. If you will be writing for us, please keep standard articles between 500 - 2000 words (focus features should run from 1500 - 3000). If you’d like to include photographs, we prefer full-sized, unedited originals (at 200 or 300 dpi). You can also feel free to throw in a biographical note at the end, or a plug for your blog.

Our deadline for standard articles for Issue 6 is July 17th (focus pieces need to be in by July 10th to allow for extra graphics and editing). For the sake of planning the issue, though, we would like to have an idea of what you’re writing about as soon as is convenient for you.

    CONTACT

You can contact us at ryan@ilovetofu.ca (editor), or kira@ilovetofu.ca (creative director). Our website is here, and the store is here. Please do take a look at the last two issues (“the relaunch”) to get a feel for the kind of things we’ve spoken about in the past. Plus, they’re free! (Just put “0” in the box asking for a price)

Hey folks,
Issue 5 of T.O.F.U. Magazine is out! There are recipes, spring cleaning tips (body, mind, and closet), and a feature piece on Jo-Anne McArthur of We Animals. I worked on this issue as Creative Director again, and made some changes (wider pages, more uniform styles, etc.). As always, if you like it, tell people. If you don’t, tell us!
The next issue will be focusing on problems within veganism - racism, classism, homophobia/sexism, and ethnocentrism will be major players. We’re also looking for contributors for that issue, so if you have something to say about the intersections of veganism with forms of oppression/appropriation/commodification/difference, let me know! Submission guidelines will be posted next month. Obviously, issue 6 will mean a lot to me, but in the meantime, issue 5 is a good spring read, so check it out if you’re interested!

um the next issue sounds AWESOME

Hahaha, thanks! It’s been my pet project since I started working with T.O.F.U. - I’m really excited to get started! Exclamation points!!
