the “you don’t know me” clause
In the context of cultural appropriation, and especially being called out on it, this bullshit argument
- asserts the individuality of the defendant while they are being called out on behaviour that is practically indistinguishable from pretty much everybody else’s—it’s neither clever nor original
- asserts the individuality of the defendant while they are being called out on behaviour that denies and erases the individuality of whole groups of people
- ignores and erases the influence of social and historical context and the existence of systemic discrimination, instead making it seem like “just” a personal problem
That there is why NOBODY in the calling-out department gives a fuck about how it was just a costume, just a party, just a joke, how you’re 15% Seneca from Alaska or how it made your baby sister happy and how the angry natives just ruin everybody’s FUN.
That is why you get called even worse than a racist when you defend yourself with bullshit like “you don’t know me”.
That is why you are NOT seen or treated as a separate entity from all the other appropriators.
