“I Don’t Care if You are Black, White, Blue or Green”

    racismschool:

    What is this statement?

When I’ve heard it before, it’s pissed me off so much that I would force myself to make a joke so that I wouldn’t curse out the person who said it. I would laugh and say “You don’t care if someone is blue? If I turn blue I am dying. You should call someone.”

    It’s far from funny though.

I’ve never heard a non-racist person say this. Not once. Not ever. I’m not saying it’s never happened, I’m just saying it hasn’t happened in my presence. This line as well as “I don’t see color” or “I am color blind” is bullshit. Full blown, grade A bullshit.

    What’s wrong with seeing color?

You see, the problem here is that this statement is trying to be all encompassing. When you announce that you don’t see color or trail off into some damn non-skin tone primary color, you are being dismissive. You are saying, we are all the same. We are not. In theory, it’s a lovely sentiment but it’s not realistic. Those that tell you that your skin color won’t matter if you work hard. Live in a different world than I do. I am not even mad about the fact that we live in a different world. You can’t change your vantage point any more than I can.

What pisses me off is this idea that admitting to seeing what’s there is being made to be a dirty thing. It’s not. It’s realistic. Yes, it would be great if we could all hold hands and sing We are the World but we aren’t going to do that.

We don’t live in some magical utopia. Thing is, I don’t really know anyone that WANTS to live that way anyway. This thought that “Equality” means we all like each other or that we all share what we have and live together as one is insanity. Real live insanity. When people that say the things I’ve mentioned here talk, they are either talking about this idyllic world or they are racist with a color based version of “I have black friends.” No matter which, we can’t hang out.

Equality doesn’t mean that we are friends. For some reason, people don’t understand that. You can be a non-racist and also not like me.

Saying you don’t see color at worst, makes me think that color is ALL that you see. At best, makes me think you live in some delusional world that I do not want to be a part of.

    SEE COLOR. Color is pretty.
